The Fachsprachprüfung is designed to be practical and takes the form of an individual examination before an examination board consisting of three members, at least two of whom are licensed physicians. In the examination, specialist language skills in a profession-specific context - oriented towards language level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) - are expected. The exam focuses on a simulated conversation and documentation situation from everyday hospital life and consists of the following three parts, each lasting 20 minutes.
Part 1: Doctor-patient conversation
You will conduct a medical history interview with a simulated patient played by a physician member of the examination board. Record the patient's personal data and go into detail about current complaints, previous illnesses, medication history, social history and family history.
Based on the interview, formulate tentative diagnoses to share with the patient and address the patient's questions and other comments. In addition to confidently understanding the patient's information, the focus in this part of the exam is on using language that is clearly understandable to the patient, using as few foreign words and medical terminology as possible.
You may take written notes. However, these must be handed in at the end of the examination. Paper and pens are provided.
Part 2: Written report
Compile the information obtained in the doctor-patient interview in a report and describe the further procedure. This must be done in complete sentences where indicated. You will be given a template for handwriting your report. However, a PC is also available for entering the report.
Notes previously made during the doctor-patient discussion may be used. A medical dictionary may be used. The documentation takes place in a separate room, where the committee chairperson will accompany you and pick you up again for the 3rd part of the examination.
Part 3: Physician-physician communication
In the third part of the examination, you first pass on the information obtained in the doctor-patient discussion to a physician member of the examination committee. You may also use the notes taken during the doctor-patient interview. The information should be presented concisely - with competent use of medical terminology. Then engage in further discussion with the examiner.
Finally, in a short list of common medical terms ("vocabulary list"), insert the respective German-language term.
Your oral and written statements will be evaluated exclusively with regard to the medical language and language content aspects.
In case of failure, the exam can be repeated as often as necessary.
